NCTC to distribute CARES Act funding to students

North Central Texas College has received funds totaling $1.93 million to distribute directly to students affected by COVID-19 through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) Student Share Grant Funds.

NCTC has identified 2,655 eligible students that will receive $600 each from the CARES funds. An additional $338,299 will be available for students to apply for, on a first come, first received basis.

To be eligible, students must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, have a valid social security number, be registered with Selective Service (if student is a male), and have a high school diploma or GED.

Any student that has filed a FAFSA is eligible for funds. Students who have not filed their FAFSA yet are still eligible, but they must file it as soon as possible.

A few student populations are not eligible for emergency financial aid grants, including students who were enrolled exclusively in an online program on March 13, 2020, dual credit students, and students enrolled only in Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) programs.

To identify the 2,655 students who will be receiving initial funds, an NCTC committee reviewed the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) for students that had completed the FAFSA and those that had an EFC of $20,000 or below were recommended.

The Business Office will be disbursing the funds to students through their normal preferred disbursement method, either electronically deposited into the student’s bank account, electronically deposited onto their student debit card, or mailed to those students without accounts. The entire $600 will be issued directly to the student regardless of any unpaid balances on their account.

Students will be invited to apply for a portion of the additional $338,299 of HEERF funds. The application is located on their MyNCTC student portal.

The maximum award that a student can receive between the two emergency aid distribution processes is $900.
