First Angels in the Infield Scholarships awarded

When a bus accident claimed the lives of four North Central Texas College softball players in 2014, an outpouring of support for the team and the school came from all round the nation.

One way that support was shown was through donations to a scholarship fund that was established to honor the four young women who lost their lives.

The NCTC Angels in the Infield Scholarship honors Brooke Deckard, Jaiden Pelton, Meagan Richardson and Katelynn Woodlee.

To date, more than $51,000 has been donated to the NCTC Angels in the Infield Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is currently endowed at $35,000.

Preference for the scholarship is given to members of the NCTC softball team who are in good academic standing at the college and are recommended for the scholarship by the NCTC Athletic Department.

But one student will not be receiving the inaugural scholarship. Instead, 10 sophomores will each receive a scholarship this year. The 10 players were all members of the Lady Lions team in the Fall of 2014 when the accident occurred.

The scholarship recipients include Kaylea Armstrong of Burkburnett, Victoria Blagg of Denton, Bailey Buchanan of Crandall, Molly Dolezel of Belton, Megan Durante of Denton, Emily Gibbons of Denton, Emily Kuser of Midlothian, Haley McCutchen of Lone Grove, Okla., Samantha Maddin of New Waverly, and Jessica Molina of Fort Worth.

"After discussions within the athletic department and the NCTC Foundation office, this first year we thought it was appropriate to award the scholarship to these sophomores," NCTC head softball coach and athletic director Van Hedrick said. "They were the young ladies who were affected the most by the events of September 26, 2014. After what they went through just to get back on the field last year, and to see the way they excelled both on the field and in the classroom, I can think of no better group to receive this scholarship that honors their friends and teammates."
