What advice do you have for students?

Don't give up too quickly! College is hard, but that doesn't mean that you can't do hard things. We often learn new skills and insights when we stick it out and face a challenge rather than quitting. If you're having a rough time of it, come and see an advisor. We're your cheerleaders to encourage you to stay in the game!

What is your favorite quote?

In college, my favorite quote was “This, too, shall pass!” I remember several days where I had to get up at 4:30 AM and pull out my laptop and school notes and force my groggy brain to study. Being a student isn't easy. However, it helped me to remember that this is only a seasonal thing—it’s not forever. There is life after college. Hang in there!

What was your favorite subject in high school or college?

Art has always been my favorite subject. It’s funny, though, how we sometimes end up picking a major other than what we love. In fact, I ended up majoring in English, which was a subject I hated with a passion but ended up performing decently in. English often puzzled my brain with all its rules and inconsistencies, but I challenged myself to become better at it. I still love art, though, and I make time to incorporate it into my life. Now I have two subjects that I'm good at…both the opposite of math!

What NCTC student resource do you wish every student knew about?

The Writing Center! I used to work as a professional writing tutor, and I know how dedicated and awesome our NCTC tutors are! Almost all classes require a paper of some sort, so it’s nice to know that you can get help with every step of the writing process, from brainstorming a topic to getting feedback on a draft. Even if you're a great writer, it helps to get someone else’s input on your work.

What is your favorite part of your job?

The students!

What do you do for fun?

What advice do you have for students?

When you need help, don't wait and don't be afraid to ask. We all need help from time to time.

What is a random fact people would be surprised to know about you?

I was a coxswain on the University of Texas rowing team

What is your favorite part of your job?

I absolutely love working graduation. I love to see our students complete what they set out to do. It is not always easy to get to the finish line, but it is always worth it.

What advice do you have for students?

Keep your head up and keep pushing forward. NO MATTER WHAT, DO NOT GIVE UP!

Advice I wish I had heard when I was in college

Play hard BUT work harder! Don't put things off and procrastinate in your course work. Keep your momentum going after class by reading, asking questions, and doing assignments! "All you have to do is know where you're going. The answers will come to you of their own accord." - Earl Nightingale

Advice I wish I had heard when I was in college

I may have heard this advice and didn’t take it, but I wish I had been more involved on campus. In college, there were so many opportunities to join student life, network, meet people, or even partake in campus activities. I think I missed a bit of that social aspect during my college years.

What I like most about working at NCTC

There’s two things I like most about working at NCTC. One is working for a collaborative and awesome team in the Completion Center, and the second is working with first time college students and seeing them succeed.

When I’m not at work, you can find me...

Advice I wish I had heard when I was in college

I wish someone had told me not to compare myself to my peers. It’s not helpful or productive to compare yourself to your peers because we all have different things that we are dealing with that impact our journey. Focus on being the best “you” and focus on your own growth.

What I like most about working at NCTC

I enjoy the people that I work with (co-workers and students). I also love when students find their passion and career path they want to pursue. It makes me excited to see them excited about new goals they have set for themselves.

Advice I wish I had heard when I was in college

SLEEP. 8-9 hours. It’s the most important thing you can do. Figure out what time you need to be awake, then count back 9 hours and make sure you’re away from everyone and quieting down. Do that for 4 days in a row and be amazed at your superhuman self. 98 percent of us need between 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

When I’m not at work, you can find me...
