Tuition Rates

A student's tuition is based on two things; the total number of semester hours (see note below) for which a student is enrolled, and a student's permanent legal place of residence (hometown). The per-hour tuition rates for each of the four basic residency categories are as follows.

Two years ago, tuition and fees were raised to the current level with the stated intent of avoiding any increase for at least two years. While that current two-year window has now ended, the administration does not feel an increase would be appropriate with the current economic climate. With one exception, we propose continuing the current level of tuition and fees for the next academic year.

The recommended exception would be to utilize federal economic stimulus dollars to offer Fall 2021 credit students a discount for the fall term only. This discount would be valid for all fall terms – 16-week, first and second 8-week, and December mini-mester enrollment periods. The discount would be not be offered to dual credit students, as they already receive discounted tuition.

Credit Hours

Students need to understand clearly what is meant by the term "credit hours." When a student registers for a course, that course will be worth a certain number of hours of college credit for a semester.

Most courses at NCTC are worth three (3) hours of credit. However, there are courses that are worth from one (1) credit all the way up to six (6) or more hours of credit for a semester. Students can tell how many hours of credit a particular course is worth by looking at the course identification number. The second digit in this four-digit number gives the semester-credit-hour value of the course.

For example, the English course ENGL 1301 is worth three (3) hours of credit, and the French course FREN 1411 is worth four (4) hours of credit. So, if a student registers for four three-hour courses and one four-hour course, this student is enrolled for a total of sixteen (16) semester credit hours.
